Congresswoman McDonald Rivet Saves the Saginaw Social Security Office

SAGINAW— Congresswoman Kristen McDonald Rivet (MI-08) has secured a commitment from the Trump Administration that they will not close the Social Security field office in Saginaw, Michigan, after the Administration previously threatened to shutter the office.

The General Services Administration (GSA) previously included Saginaw’s Social Security Office on a list of properties targeted for disposal, before then removing the list from its website without explanation. Congresswoman McDonald Rivet immediately sent an initial letter urging the continued operation of the Saginaw office and demanding clarity on its future, but the Administration failed to respond for over a month. Yesterday, Congresswoman McDonald Rivet ratcheted up pressure on the Administration by hosting a press conference outside the field office with affected community members and sending a second letter to the GSA. 

After increasing pressure, a Trump Administration spokesperson made a firm commitment, saying, “There are no plans to permanently close the Saginaw, Michigan field office” (WNEM CBS-5). This is the first public commitment from the Administration to specifically address the Saginaw Social Security office. 

“Keeping the Saginaw Social Security office open is a big win for our region and a testament to what we can accomplish when we stand together as a community,” said Congresswoman McDonald Rivet. “While I am glad mid-Michigan seniors finally have this commitment, it shouldn’t take months-long confusion and concern, two letters, and seniors rallying in front of this building multiple times to convince the Administration how important this office is. Moving forward, Elon Musk and his extreme allies should know, if they try to cut Social Security or Medicare any further, we will be right back out there to stop them.”
