ICYMI: McDonald Rivet Defends Saginaw Social Security Office, Sends Second Letter to Trump Administration Demanding It Remain Open

Tuesday, April 22, 2025

“These are not numbers on a balance sheet. These are faces of our neighbors, of our parents, of people across our community that rely on the services that this office provides.”

SAGINAW— Today, Congresswoman Kristen McDonald Rivet (MI-08) continued her fight to protect Saginaw’s Social Security field office by holding a press conference with mid-Michigan residents who rely on Social Security. This morning, the Congresswoman sent a second letter to the General Services Administration (GSA) demanding clarity on the office’s future.

The GSA previously included Saginaw’s Social Security Office on a list of properties targeted for disposal, before then removing the list from its website and failing to respond to Congresswoman McDonald Rivet’s initial letter requesting an explanation. Today’s press conference and follow-up letter highlighted the importance of the Saginaw Social Security Office and the in-person assistance it provides to seniors and people with disabilities in mid-Michigan.

At the press conference, Congresswoman McDonald Rivet said, “These are not numbers on a balance sheet. These are faces of our neighbors, of our parents, of people across our community that rely on the services that this office provides… And I will tell you this: I will fight with every last breath to make sure that people like Tom and seniors across our community can have access to Social Security, which is a critical, critical service for them.”

Tom Brubaker, a Saginaw Township resident who benefits from Social Security Disability Insurance, said, “What they want to do — to close this office — are you kidding me? This is going to devastate our community. And it’s going to hurt people like me, because if I run into a problem, I know there’s people right here at Social Security who will meet with me… So I say to Trump, Musk: keep your chainsaw away from Social Security, and quit hurting the people most in need in our community, because we depend on it… I want to thank Congresswoman Kristen McDonald Rivet because she has been a fierce advocate and a fierce fighter for our community.”
