Congresswoman McDonald Rivet Statement on ACA Tax Credits Renewal Passing the House of Representatives

WASHINGTON— Congresswoman Kristen McDonald Rivet (MI-08) released the following statement after the U.S. House of Representatives passed a three-year renewal of the Affordable Care Act (ACA) enhanced premium tax credits. 

“For more than a year, Congress has ignored the cost crisis that’s been forcing families in mid-Michigan to choose between getting health insurance or paying the mortgage. Despite the Speaker stonewalling us for months, Republican members joined Democrats to force a vote to extend the tax credits that will save families in our community thousands of dollars per year,” said Congresswoman McDonald Rivet. “The Senate needs to vote on renewing these tax credits immediately. Every day they delay is another day that doctors’ appointments, cancer screenings, and emergency room visits are out of reach for working people in mid-Michigan.” 

Approximately 31,000 people across Genesee, Saginaw, Bay, and Midland counties claimed the ACA tax credits in 2025; because of Congress’ failure to act, the tax credits expired on December 31, 2025.

Congresswoman McDonald Rivet has been raising alarms about spiking health care costs and advancing commonsense solutions that would soften their impact on Michiganders. For example: 

• In November, the Congresswoman  voted against the government funding package that failed to lower health care costs.
• Earlier in November, the Congresswoman spoke on the steps of the U.S. Capitol about the importance of the ACA tax credits for mid-Michigan families and hosted a roundtable discussion in Flint with local health care administrators and community members who rely on the ACA tax credits.
• In October, the Congresswoman stood with a mother from Midland whose insurance premiums are jumping by 18% to call on Congress to renew the ACA tax credits and lower costs.
• In September, the Congresswoman illustrated how the looming health care crisis will raise costs and kick Michiganders off their insurance.
• Earlier in September, the Congresswoman led three dozen of her colleagues in  a letter to Congressional Leadership demanding an extension of the ACA tax credits.
• In July, the Congresswoman called on Republican colleagues to join her in supporting the Health Care Affordability Act of 2025, which would make the ACA tax credits permanent.
• Earlier in July, the Congresswoman voted against Republicans’ trillion-dollar Medicaid cuts, and spoke about the local consequences alongside health care workers and a Flint family that relies on Medicaid for cancer treatments.
• In June, the Congresswoman stood with seniors in Bay County to call on Congress to reverse $1 trillion in Medicaid cuts that will hurt local residents and nursing homes.
