McDonald Rivet Urges House Republicans to Join Her and Prevent Health Care Costs from Skyrocketing
WASHINGTON— Today, Congresswoman Kristen McDonald Rivet (MI-08) is calling on Republicans in Congress to join her and make Affordable Care Act tax credits permanent to prevent health care costs from skyrocketing in January.
When President Trump and Congressional Republicans passed the Big Ugly Bill, they ensured the Affordable Care Act’s (ACA) enhanced premium tax credits (PTCs) will stop at the end of this year, effectively raising costs for working families across America. Since the passage of the Big Ugly Bill, insurers have estimated premiums will increase for individuals in Michigan by an average of 16.8%, and studies show that premiums will soar by an average of $730 for each mid-Michigan resident on the ACA Marketplace. The Big Ugly Bill prioritized tax relief for the wealthiest Americans instead of the ACA tax credit that working families rely on.
To protect the pocketbooks of working families, Congresswoman McDonald Rivet has co-sponsored and is pushing for the passage of the Health Care Affordability Act of 2025, which would make the Affordable Care Act’s enhanced premium tax credits permanent.
“It is already way too hard for families in Michigan to make ends meet. The last thing they need is hundreds of dollars added to the cost of their health insurance,” said Congresswoman McDonald Rivet. “The Big Ugly Bill gave plenty of tax breaks to special interests and the ultra-wealthy, but Republicans refused to protect the ACA tax credit working families rely on. Before open enrollment season this fall, when 2026 premiums will be set, we need to pass the Health Care Affordability Act to make the ACA tax credits permanent and protect the pocketbooks and health of working families. There isn't any time to waste.”
Congresswoman McDonald Rivet voted against the Big Ugly Bill because of how it would impact mid-Michigan families, and since its passage, she has continuously highlighted how the Big Ugly Bill would raise costs for residents of Genesee, Saginaw, Bay, and Midland counties.
- On June 20th, the Congresswoman stood with mid-Michigan seniors in Bay County to highlight how Medicaid cuts in the Big Ugly Bill will hurt local residents and nursing homes.
- On July 10th, Congresswoman McDonald Rivet raised alarms with local doctors, nurses, and patients in Flint about how Medicaid cuts will lead to health care being less affordable and less accessible for everyone, regardless of where they get their health insurance.
