McDonald Rivet Statement on Voting to Repeal California’s EV Mandate

WASHINGTON— Today, Congresswoman Kristen McDonald Rivet (MI-08) released the following statement after breaking with the majority of Democrats by voting to repeal the Environmental Protection Agency’s waivers for California’s vehicle emissions standards.

“You should get to choose what kind of car is right for you,” said Congresswoman McDonald Rivet. “California’s ban on gas-powered vehicles would raise costs on families, take away their choices, and kill auto jobs, including many here in mid-Michigan. I stood with Michigan consumers and auto workers by voting to repeal California’s EV mandate.”

California’s electric vehicle mandate requires zero-emissions vehicles to account for 35% of auto sales in 2026, 51% by 2028, and 100% by 2035; 11 other states have adopted California’s rule. Analysis from the Center for Automotive Research determined a similar rule (which mandates 68% battery electric vehicles by 2032) would decrease the number of cars produced in the United States by 4.6 million units, leading to 120,000 auto manufacturing jobs lost.
