McDonald Rivet Statement on Executive Order to Derail the Department of Education

Thursday, March 20, 2025

FLINT— Today, Congresswoman Kristen McDonald Rivet (MI-08) released the following statement after President Trump signed an executive order, dismantling the Department of Education.

“Having spent my life working on improving education and helping kids, I’m appalled by these efforts to defund public schools to pay for tax breaks for millionaires,” said Congresswoman McDonald Rivet. “We need to do a lot of work to help students improve reading levels and math scores, but eliminating the Department of Education is not the answer. This will cause unnecessary and irreversible harm to students in Michigan, especially those in special education and underfunded school systems.”

Congresswoman McDonald Rivet previously served as the Chief of Staff for the Michigan Department of Education and as a member of the Michigan State Senate Committee on Education and the K-12 Appropriations Subcommittee.
