McDonald Rivet Appointed to Agriculture and Transportation & Infrastructure Committees

Wednesday, January 15, 2025

WASHINGTON— Congresswoman Kristen McDonald Rivet (MI-08) was appointed to serve on the U.S. House Committee on Agriculture and U.S. House Committee on Transportation & Infrastructure in the 119th Congress.

The committees – known for consensus and bipartisan action – put Rep. McDonald Rivet in position to advocate on the pocketbook issues she has emphasized throughout her career.

“My top priority is to lower costs for Mid-Michigan families. These committee assignments put me in a great position to work on the issues important for our jobs, our families, and our pocketbooks,” said Congresswoman McDonald Rivet. “I am looking forward to rolling up my sleeves with members from both parties to rebuild our roads and infrastructure, protect our family farms and make sure that every Michigan resident has what they need to thrive.”

The House Committee on Agriculture is responsible for federal agricultural policy and provides funding to support agricultural research and development. The Committee also shapes food nutrition programs, like the crucial Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), and oversees programs that benefit rural communities. This year, the Committee is expected to author the Farm Bill – expansive legislation that dictates national agriculture, nutrition, conservation and forestry policy, which is traditionally passed in a bipartisan manner.

“Having grown up in a midwestern farm town, Congresswoman McDonald Rivet brings important life experience to the work of our committee. I look forward to working with her to advocate for hardworking family farmers,” said Agriculture Committee Ranking Member Angie Craig (MN-02).

The House Committee on Transportation & Infrastructure has jurisdiction over all modes of transportation – aviation, maritime and waterborne transportation, highways, bridges, mass transit, and railroads. The Committee also has jurisdiction over other aspects of our national infrastructure, such as clean water and waste water management, flood damage reduction, the development of economically depressed urban and rural areas, and disaster preparedness response. This term, the Committee is expected to work on the Surface Transportation Bill, to enhance American roads, bridges and public transportation.

“Representative Kristen McDonald Rivet has long been a champion of the working class and will immediately join T&I Democrats’ fight to create jobs for hardworking women and men and invest in safer, cleaner, greener and more accessible transportation. As a former Michigan state senator and Bay City Commissioner, McDonald Rivet will bring years of lawmaking experience and local leadership to her work on the Committee. She will also be a steadfast advocate for Michigan’s infrastructure—making sure that Michiganders can rely on safe and accessible transportation systems,” said Transportation & Infrastructure Committee Ranking Member Rick Larsen (WA-02)

“Rep. Kristen McDonald Rivet will be an outstanding member of the distinguished House Agriculture and Transportation and Infrastructure Committees in the 119th Congress, and her appointment to these prestigious committees is a true reflection of her exceptional talents and strong leadership in Michigan and beyond. Over the course of the next two years, these committees will take up incredibly important work on behalf of the American people, and I look forward to seeing all Rep. McDonald Rivet accomplishes as we work together to seek common ground for the common good,” said Assistant Democratic Leader Joe Neguse
