Congresswoman McDonald Rivet Statement on Voting Against Extreme Tax Package
WASHINGTON— Today, Congresswoman Kristen McDonald Rivet (MI-08) released the following statement after voting against House Republicans' extreme tax package that strips away healthcare and food while cutting taxes for the wealthiest Americans.
“It is already too hard for working families to make ends meet. This tax package is extreme and will make things even harder,” said Congresswoman McDonald Rivet. “I voted no because gutting Medicaid, slashing food assistance, and adding trillions to the national debt will make things more expensive, and wealthy people and corporations don’t need a tax cut. These priorities are completely backward and will have a devastating impact on the families in our community we cannot afford.”
The proposal, which passed the House early this morning in a partisan vote, would eliminate health care coverage for 13.7 million Americans (nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office) – including over 30,000 from mid-Michigan. It slashes $300 billion from food assistance programs – something 1 in 4 households in mid-Michigan depend on. It is expected to raise the national deficit by $5 trillion. In all, the proposal will benefit the wealthiest 10% of Americans while taking money away from the poorest 10% (nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office).
