Congresswoman McDonald Rivet Statement on Government Funding Package
WASHINGTON— Congresswoman Kristen McDonald Rivet (MI-08) released the following statement on the six-bill government funding package that included Labor, Health, and Human Services; Transportation, Housing, and Urban Development; Financial Services and General Government; National Security, Department of State, and Related Programs; Homeland Security; and Defense.
“Today, I voted no on the set of funding bills in front of Congress.
“I am glad to see five of the six funding bills in the package move forward – they were negotiated in a bipartisan manner and have important measures I fully support, including a pay raise for our troops, funding for Head Start, and support for local mid-Michigan projects.
“However, as I have said over recent weeks, I will not vote to send additional funds to the current version of ICE that is making communities less safe and is in dire need of reform – such as following basic law enforcement recruitment and training standards, unmasking and using body cameras, mandating warrants signed by a judge, and adhering to basic use of force standards.
“Immigration and border protection are core responsibilities of our government, but this version of ICE has strayed far beyond that core function. Families from Minneapolis to mid-Michigan and across our country have seen the chaos and deadly consequences of allowing ICE’s operations to continue without change. For taxpayer dollars to continue, we demand reform, and if Administration leadership like Kristi Noem or Stephen Miller won’t comply, they need to go.”
