Midland Daily News: McDonald Rivet co-sponsors bill to reverse tax breaks for data centers
Democratic U.S. Reps. Kristen McDonald Rivet, of Bay City, and Don Davis, of eastern North Carolina, announced a bill Wednesday to reverse some tax breaks for data centers.
The bill, which McDonald Rivet and Davis are calling “Reverse Big Ugly Tax Breaks for Data Centers Act,” would exclude data centers from tax breaks in the “One Big Beautiful Bill" that President Donald Trump signed into law in 2025.
“Tax cuts need to go to families, not data centers,” McDonald Rivet said at a Washington, D.C. press conference on Wednesday. “We absolutely should not cut health care and food assistance for children and seniors to pay for tax giveaways to corporations.”
Among the cuts in the One Big Beautiful Bill were nearly $1 trillion in Medicaid and over $185 billion in food assistance.
Among the tax breaks in the bill were a 100% bonus depreciation, which lets companies fully deduct the cost of capital expenditures in one year rather than over the property’s lifetime, and renewal of the opportunity zone program. Data centers would be excluded from both of these tax cuts under the new bill.
“Across the country, Americans are seeing the results as data centers are built in their own neighborhoods, often with little to no local input or control,” McDonald Rivet said. “Washington is giving handouts to big tech companies while American families are drowning.”
Twenty-three other legislators joined McDonald Rivet and Davis in introducing the bill.
